Approximately 400 international business executives from across the region, gathered at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on September 5, for the Growing Global 2003 event. The event included an historic signing agreement between the Port of New Orleans and the Tri-City Regional Port (PIC) and a keynote address from former Ambassador Phillip Lader (PIC) . Robert Frueh, executive director of the World Trade Center, presented an overview of achievements over the past ten years (PIC) while Fred Bartelsmeyer, chairman, World Trade Center Saint Louis Board of Advisors, announced the direction for the coming year (PIC).

During the awards segment of the event, the following were recognized for their outstanding contributions to international trade in the region:

Leonard Guarraia, Ph.D. (PIC) Dr. Leonard Guarraia, president and chief executive officer, World Agriculture Forum, accepted the 2003 St. Louis Global Ambassador Award from the World Trade Center. Dr. Guarraia was honored for founding the World Agricultural Forum in 1997 to meet the urgent need for a neutral, inclusive forum for the whole of agriculture to come together to identify problems, develop solutions and discuss alternatives. It is structured to embrace the multiplicity of global attitudes, customs and cultures. Developing countries and advocacy organizations are given an equal voice on the world stage.

Brewer Science Inc. (PIC) Brewer Science was recognized with the 2003 Growing Global Award from the World Trade Center. In 1981, Brewer Science Inc., a supplier of specialty chemicals and instruments in the global microelectronics and optoelectronics industries, located in Rolla, Missouri, opened its doors with three employees. Today, they have grown to 295 employees worldwide. They opened facilities in Derby, England in 1992 to serve the European market, and then in Hong Kong, China in 2001 and Taipei, Taiwan in 2003 to serve the Asian market. Over the last five years alone, Brewer Science has achieved 113% sales growth.

TRG Accessories, LLC. (PIC) TRG was recognized with the 2003 Global Entrpreneur Award from the World Trade Center. Since its entrance into the global market in 1998, TRG earned exclusive global rights for the following luggage and travel industry brands: Swiss Army/Victorinox, Timberland Packs & Gear and Callaway Travel Gear, an unprecedented accomplishment in the industry. Within four years, the company was doing business in more than 40 countries and has generated sales in excess of $45 million.
